Top 4 Roofing Myths: BUSTED

|

A roof is a funny thing. It’s one of the most important parts of any home, but most people don’t know a lot about roofs. There’s a lot of misinformation and bad advice floating around out there and we want to set things straight.

Here are a few of the most common roofing myths we hear and the facts that refute them.

  1. Always get at least three estimates– This is good advice if you’re remodeling your kitchen, but it’s not as necessary when getting a new roof. Most of time your insurance company will be footing most of the bill, and you’ll be paying your deductible. Since your out of pocket expenses aren’t likely to change, getting multiple estimates will typically only save your insurance company money.  It won’t hurt to get a few options, but it does take time and scheduling can be a hassle. If you have the time and don’t mind working out the logistics then feel free to get as many estimates as you want, but there’s nothing wrong with just getting one.
  2. More insulation is better– A properly insulated attic and roof will save you a few dollars on your utility bill, but moderation is key. Too little insulation and your AC until will be running 24/7. Too much insulation and your roof won’t ventilate properly. This can create a moisture trap, which will warp or rot the joists.
  3. Don’t strip the old roof– Putting the new roof on top of the old roof, without stripping it down to the decking, might seem like good way to save time, but this is never a good idea. Covering up an old roof hides problems that might need to be addressed in the future.
At Tier-One we take every roof down to the decking because we believe in doing the job right.
  4. All shingles are created equally– This can not be further from the truth. They might look the same but there’s a lot that goes into the design of shingles. Some are made to take more damage, some can hold up better against wind, and others come with a lifetime warranty.
